Kate 8 Months

Dear Kate,

In two weeks, we’re heading on an airplane to go visit your Grammy and Papa in Florida and I’m a little nervous about you. Although you are very stationary, you are a social little butterfly and have become less and less cuddly over time. You rarely fall asleep in my arms–even when I try and snuggle with you before bed. You prefer to be on your back in your dark room–none of which are going to happen on an airplane. We have a long day of  travel and I’m praying you’ll snuggle and sleep on my chest on our flights. Also prayers that nobody gets sick!

I know you’re only 8 months old and there is a whole lot of life to live but the bond you have with your sister has exceeded any expectations that I could have ever imagined. You whole heartedly love Lexi to death. I’ll start to raise my voice at Lexi to knock it off and leave you alone cause I think she’s going to irritate you, only to start hearing you giggle hysterically. She honestly will just look at you and start to laugh. Your head is on a swivel looking for her. I’ve started going into your room and closing the door (opposed to sitting on the couch downstairs) to nurse you as you’re so distracted by her. I pray that you continue to be the peanut butter to her jelly because sisters are awesome.

Sleep

Your fairly regular sleep routine has been disrupted this past month with the two little teethers that have popped through. The first one came about two weeks ago and then the second one came over the past two days. Overall, you have done really well and are still our super happy Beatle, but I can tell they have caused you some pain. You’re waking at night 2-5 times and the ONLY thing that will calm you down is to nurse. I’ll try and rock you and put your blankie next to your face and sing you songs but you just scream and squirm around in my arms like a limp noodle. You’ve also been taking some amazing naps 3+ hours twice a day! We’ve been giving you some medicine to help with the pain and that has made a big difference. However, you haven’t spiked a fever and haven’t been nawing on everything like you had in the weeks leading up to this. The only ‘symptom’ I would say you had was watery eyes. You must have a clogged tear duct because you always have gunk floating around in your eyes and they get excessively watery while teething and get some build up around your eyes. Bedtime is still around 7:30 and includes changing diaper, putting jammies on nursing and then being put down in your crib. You’ll sleep until somewhere in the 4-6 range, nurse and then go back to sleep. You’re down to 2 naps a day and the length totally depends on if Lexi has school or not. If she does, your naps almost always get shortened as you have to go get her but if it is a non-school day, you’ll snooze for 1-2 hours.

Development

You started sitting up last month and have continued to strength those muscles and are now a master at it. You love to play with toys, banging things together, chewing on them and just touching and feeling the different textures and sizes of things.

You love love love bath time. Now that you’re sitting, you go in with your big brother and sister from time to time. We’ll put about enough water in the tub that half of your ears are covered when you lie down to rinse off the soap.

With the addition of table food and the amount that you’re eating, you’ve started to poop everyday. They are pretty hard and painful for you. We’ve started to put an ounce or two of apple juice into your bottles to give you some extra fiber and for the most part it seems to be working.

This month you’ve learned to take your pacifier in and out of your mouth very consistently and will find it while you’re sleeping and pop it back in. You were pretty reliant on the paci for the first 6 months or so, but now, we’ve started to take it away a little bit more often so it isn’t always in your mouth.

You have yet to roll over and show no signs of doing it anytime soon. You are just so content sitting I don’t think you think there is a reason to learn to do anything else.

Happy 8 months little Kate the Great! We love you to pieces.

Love,

Mama

Dear Kate,

Sitting up is one of my favorite milestones from the first year as it is a total game changer and you are doing a pretty good job at it! You’re pretty laid back as it is, but your ability to watch what is going on around you and sit and play with toys makes life so much easier. I can regularly clean up the kitchen after meals or cook without you in my arms. Granted, you want me in eyesight but I am so much more efficient with two arms instead of just one. And you love to play with toys and your fine motor skills improve everyday.

img_9659

This month you also learned how to give kisses. You’ll open your mouth like a baby bird and slobber all over me. This messy act of affection is one of the few ways you can show how much you love me and as gross as it is (because lets be real) I love it and will gladly accept them at any point.

img_9655

img_9673

Your sleeping patterns are pretty stable and consistent at this point. You sleep from 7:30 to about 5 am and take two naps in the day that are about 1.5 – 2 hours each.

Girlfriend, you love to eat. Whenever we put you in your highchair, you widely kick your legs and hoot in excitement. You have eaten sweet potatoes, squash, peaches, pears, green beans, blackberries, eggs, peanut butter, strawberries, blueberries, yogurt bites, puffs and mum-mum crackers. With the exception of the mum-mum crackers we need to feed you everything.

img_9499

Nursing is still going pretty good. You nurse on both sides for each feeding and pumping sessions are OK. I’m barely producing enough for you and I’m hoping I can make it the full year.

Earlier in the month (before you learned to sit), you would were really working on building up your ab muscles. You would completely lift your head off the ground as if you were trying to sit up or just do some crunches. It looked like you were doing the 100’s exercise in pilates. With that said, there is 100% zero interest in rolling. You are so content on your back sucking on your toes and you don’t even attempt to roll to your side. I have a feeling that you might never roll over or for that matter even crawl and could go straight to walking. You despise tummy time like big time and its hard to put you into a sour mood by going on your tummy when you’re happy as can be just sitting.

39576631782_157fdaae24_o

This month, you also celebrated your first Christmas and New Years. You loved playing with the wrapping paper and looking at the lights. You slept through the entire gift opening Christmas morning, but the big kids saved you a couple of gifts to open. Santa and all your relatives spoiled you!

39576641182_4bf532c346_o

Another big milestone was spending your first few nights away from me. Daddy and I went to Arizona for a wedding and you got to spend some extra time with Grammy and Papa. You did awesome and I’m sure you barely noticed I was gone. I am so grateful you are the most amazing baby every and was barely worried. You are such a happy, awesome sleeper and eater that I knew there wouldn’t be any problems. My biggest fear was about pumping enough milk to replenish the stash you would go through while I was gone. And everything worked out just great. I never did a comparison of how much milk you drank and how much I brought back, but it seemed close enough.

Sweet little Kate the great, I love you to pieces. Your smile and sweet natured personality are going to move mountains someday. I love you and am so grateful you are mine.

Christmas 2017

Christmas 2017

Dear Lexi, William and Kate,

This was my favorite Christmas yet. It was so fun to celebrate and see all joy and excitement through your eyes.

IMG_E9551

Usually, I’m super eager to get all the Christmas decorations up (well before Thanksgiving) and this year I just didn’t feel the rush. Life is pretty crazy with 3 little kids, throw in learning a new job and life is just hectic. I officially gave myself the pass to be low key and not feel like I need to do everything and be OK with that. The holiday season kicked off for us on Thanksgiving when Grammy B gave matching Santa Jammies to the three of you and Ivy and Claire.

IMG_9304

Then the following week, Santa and Mrs. Clause visited mom’s work and you got to sit on his lap and take a picture. Lexi asked for Hatchimal Collectables and William talking Spiderman. They also had cookies to decorate, pictures to color and could meet Dancer and Blitzen.

kids-santa-pic-2017

IMG_9346-COLLAGE We eventually got the decorations out and Lexi and William LOVED helping set everything out and put ornaments up on the tree. Eventually, I replaced most of them so they were more dispersed throughout the tree (I’m OCD like that) but it was so fun to listen to Christmas music and see how you get into the spirit of the season.

IMG_9517

Our elf, Sparkle Minnie returned again this year and of course got into some mischief.

Then, on December 15th, Lexi had her first school Christmas Concert. I cried. I just couldn’t handle all those sweet, young innocent voices up there. It just made my heart so happy.

IMG_9413

Then the following day, we headed over to Grammy and Papa’s to celebrate Christmas with the Bothwells. You kids were SO SO SO excited to see Claire and Ivy and give everyone the gifts we had picked out. It was a great relaxing afternoon/evening filled with lots of Papa Flashlight Tag, Ya-ba-da-ba-do’s, nummy food and laughter and matching spiderman jammies.

IMG_9491-1

Later that week, Lexi had her Christmas dance recital, we decorated a gingerbread house, Lexi and William had fun playing Santa and his reindeer and snowman pancakes for breakfast on Christmas Eve. We went to the Christmas Eve celebration at Open Door with the Sampsons (William feel asleep) before heading over to the Menter’s to celebrate with with the Tanseys.

IMG_9492-COLLAGE IMG_9533

Then, on Christmas morning, you miraculously slept in until about 7:30 and were just giddy with excitement. We have you come straight into our room without getting a peak of the tree so we can all see it together.

IMG_9542-COLLAGEOpening presents was SO much fun. Kate was not having any of it and ended up back in bed around 8:00 and missed it all, but Lexi and William each took turns and were so excited for the gifts that each other received. William wanted to open and play with each toy as he opened it, which really extended the gift opening time while Lexi wanted to open as many presents as fast as she could

Couple of highlights include: William: Talking spiderman from Santa, Beatuy and the Beast Lego Kit, Digger Set, spiderman slippers, magnatiles, a sled, spiderman lego kit, Mickey’s garage, Mickey little people

IMG_9557-COLLAGE

Lexi: Hatchimal collectables from Santa, Stephanie house lego kit, magnatiles, hot-loops, stain glass art kit, Minnie and Daisy Little People, Aqua Beads, Osmo Creative Kit for the iPad, pants, underwear, socks, puzzles

Kate: backpack, some new spoons, sippy cups, bathtub toys

IMG_9504-COLLAGE

We spent the rest of the day lounging in our pajamas, eating snacks, playing with toys and putting together legos.

The following day, we hosted the Sampson’s for Christmas. We had some nummy food, laughed a lot and had fun exchanging gifts with each other.

One of the funnest things about the season was Lexi starting to understand the true meaning. She spent a lot of time in school learning about Jesus and the story of his birth. Our elf brought has a little people manger set and some good books about the Christmas story that we really enjoyed reading.

Merry Christmas my little angles. I love you.

Mama

Kate 6 months

Katelyn,

I have been trying to figure out a way to write the first paragraph of this letter for over 3 months. I’ve written and deleted something probably 15 different times and nothing seems quite good enough. This month we had the honor of baptizing you and officially welcoming you into God’s family/church. And I’ve been attempting to put into words how Gods work is imprinted into the sparkle of your eyes, the soft touch of your cheek, the smell of vanilla on your hair, the roll of skin on your thighs, the calmness of your babbles, the love your siblings have for you and the awesomeness of God that I’ve seen in my life and hope you will too. After umpteen times of writing and re-writing, I’ve figured out that no words or story could possibly summarize the strength and importance faith can have in your life. I see, experience and thank God for his miracles in my life everyday. I pray that as you grow up, you too, will choose this path. Baptism, is the first of many, I believe my role is in being your mom. I promise to do my best to live a life of example and set a solid Christian foundation for you as well as pray that you will allow Jesus into your heart and that someday YOU will choose to put God at the center of your life.

Everything about you is a little miracle from God my sweet girl. Your tender heart, your calmness, your adaptability, your sleeping and eating patterns are all little sprinkles of miracles from the big guy upstairs.

Most nights you sleep about 10 hours straight each night (7:30pm – 5:00pm). The first time you wake up, I’ll pop your pacifier back in and you’ll sleep for another 30-60 minutes. The second time you wake up, you’ll usually be happy and chatty as a bird. As soon as I enter, you quiet down and light up with a huge smile and squinty eyes once you see my face. You’re still not rolling over from back to front so we’ve continued to swaddle you. For bedtime, you’ll nurse and then I’ll swaddle you up, turn off the lights, put a blanket next to your face and snuggle with you in the rocking chair and you’re out in less than 5 minutes. If I’m in the middle of putting the big kids to bed, I’ll just put you down awake in your crib and you fall asleep, without a peep. Naps range from 2-3 a day and anywhere from 20 min to 2+ hours, in your crib swaddled in a muslin blanket.

Nursing is still going well. Each morning, I’ll nurse you on my left (non-dominate side) and then pump the right as I’ll get 6-7oz. Then for the remainder of the day I usually nurse or pump both sides. The morning session, I’ll usually get 5oz and 3-4 in the afternoon. Most nights, I’ve still been pumping before I go to bed around 11 or 12 and will get another 6 oz. So all up, I’m producing an extra 6-10oz of milk each day that I’ve been stock-pilling in the freezer. With all that said, I’m still super stressed about it, more so than I remember with the other two and I’m not sure why I can’t relax about it. Moving on. This month you started to show a ton of interest in my food. I started to give you little pieces of bread and then spontaneously decided to give you some baby squash one night and you LOVED it. You ate the entire container and would open your mouth every time I brought up the spoon. Considering we skipped the rice cereal, you did a pretty amazing job keeping the food in your mouth and not spitting it all out.

You’ve FINALLY started to roll from your stomach to your back–it doesn’t happen very often, but you can do it. You love to lay (on your back) on you playmat and play with toys hanging from it. We also brought out the exersaucer this month and you do pretty good in that (as long as we have a blanket behind you to prevent you from flopping around like a fish.) This month you’ve also started to take your pacifier out of your mouth and put it back in with 50% rate. Your favorite place is in mommy’s arms and are as happy as can be just leaching onto me and tagging along wherever I go. If we put you down and walk away, you throw a fit, but are as happy as a puppy when we’re back within arms reach.

As far as the details go for your Baptism, the actual celebration was on Sunday, December 3rd. We celebrated at St. Andrew’s Church in Mahtomedi, same church your brother and sister were baptized at and that Mommy and Daddy were married at. All of your extended family was there to celebrate and you are blessed to have Uncle Dustin as your Godfather and two Godmothers, Auntie Beca and Auntie Rael. You were a total gem throughout the ceremony and wore the family heirloom baptismal gown, and the 26th baby to wear it! Following the ceremony, we headed over to Grammy and Papa’s house for a dual celebration for your baptism and Lexi’s 5th Birthday!

1st’s for the month: Thanksgiving, Snowfall, Food, Christmas celebrations (school concert, dance recital, music, decorations, shopping! (including Black Friday shopping!) sibling birthday party.

6 month stats

  • Weight: 15.1 oz
  • Length: 25″
  • Head circumference:
  • Clothes: 3-6 month
  • Diapers: size 2

We are so blessed to have you be a part of our family and I thank God for you and all of your little blessings everyday. You are perfect in every way possible and I love you to pieces little Kate the Great!

Dear Kate,

I will bet you a million dollars there has never been a cuter little ‘chip’. At the beginning of this month, you joined the crew in dressing up as Beauty and the Beast characters for Halloween. Lexi was Belle, William was Beast and you were Chip. Daddy made your onesie and I dug out Lexi’s 1-year birthday tutu for the pic.

KAte 5 months 1 Eating

So far, you have enjoyed the luxury of exclusive breastmilk and it is going well. But being over anxious about stuff is kind of my thang, so i continue to stress about not producing enough. About half way through the month, I stopped nursing you in the middle of the night, which has enabled me to pump one side in the morning and I’ll usually get 6 oz. And then I’ll nurse you on the other side. At work, I pump twice a day and per the Drs. recommendation, started pumping both sides. The first two weeks or so, this helped ensure I would get a total of 5 oz during each session so I was set for the next day. By the end of the month, I wasn’t consistently getting 5 oz during each session–queue the stress. I am also pumping before bed each night and getting a little somethin’ so that usually supplements what I didn’t pump while at work. To sum things up, I don’t get as much milk when I pump as when I nurse, or you are more satisfied with the amount you get from the boob than what you get from a bottle. I’m most worried about what is going to happen in January when Daddy and I got to Arizona for a wedding for a couple of days. Will I have a big enough stash to get us through the time or will we need to do formula? I’m also trying to remind myself, that I had it much easier with Lexi and William as I didn’t really need to pump anywhere close to what I’m doing with you. I was home with Lexi for the first 7 months and William was at daycare and I could walk down and nurse him everyday so two completely different scenarios and I can’t compare you to them.

Last month the Dr. gave us the thumbs up to start giving you some rice cereal or food and you haven’t shown any interest in food yet so we’ll probably start that around the 6 month time frame.

Sleeping

High-five baby girl, I think you have finally figured out what a glorious solid night of sleep feels like! (knock on wood somewhere that I haven’t jinxed myself here). At the beginning of the month, I forgot about the ‘4 month sleep regression’ and once someone else mentioned it, I remembered what was going on. I stopped nursing in the middle of the night and when you would wake, I would rock/bounce you back to sleep. Around week 2-3 of the month, I was able to just stick the paci back in your mouth and just this past week, you’ve gone 4-5 consecutive nights of sleeping from 8:00ish to 7:30ish!!!! HEAVEN!! Except, for some odd reason, I still feel tired?!?! But a million times better than what it was!

IMG_9267

You have shown zero signs of rolling, so you are still swaddled at night and in the day, you’re usually swaddled in a muslin blanket. You take about 3 naps a day, morning, afternoon and evening and they range anywhere from 20 min to 2+ hours. There is no rhyme or reason to the length–they just happen. Almost 100% of your naps are taken in your crib. Most of the time you fall asleep in our arms and we put you down, but we do also put you down when you’re very drowsy and you’ll just fall asleep on your own. Rarely, do you fall sleep and stay sleeping in your carseat. You usually wake up within 10-20 minutes of coming home–just like your big brother.

Development

  • Very strong head control
  • Getting better at tummy time, but still don’t like it. You’ll roll from your tummy to your back–but not intentionally, just gravity/momentum taking over
  • Love the bath
  • This month you’ve learned about your vocal range and have developed this high-pitch screeching noise and do it all. of. the. time. And it drives your daddy CRAZY!
  • You’ve become much more interactive with your toys. You regularly grab them and play with them
  • This is a total shocker, but you’re less reliant on your paci then you have been in the past. From time to time, you’ll spit it out on your own and just chat away or just be Ok without sucking on anything
  • You are a smile machine and flash those pink gummy grins to anyone that glances at you, and then proceed to turn them into puddles with your big bright eyes
  • You’ve started to show some signs of separation anxiety and well whine or cry when I leave the room or am not within eye sight. Most of the time, you forget within a minute and move onto something else
  • As of this week, you’re too long for 3 month clothes, but 6 month are still pretty big on you
  • Size 2 diapers

Sibling Love

This is my favorite section to write each month because it keeps getting better and better. Basically, you and Lexi think each other are ‘the bomb’. Lexi is the only person who can make you laugh on demand. You think the world of her and she is equally obsessed. This love can’t be overshadowed by your big bro though. He is equally as awesome and is always singing you songs when you’re crying and gets into baby voice to talk to you and loves to make sure you are happy.

Halloween 2017

I cringed when Lexi requested to be a princess for Halloween this year. My years of cute animal coordinated costumes were over and was so disappointed that I wouldn’t even get one year with all three of you in them.

As the weeks went on, Lexi was insistent on being a Princess, Repunzel to be exact and claimed she had been growing out her hair for a whole year for this. However, William had developed a very odd attachment to the Beast (and would often roar at people the way the Beast did when he was angry, from Beauty and the Beast)

I used this to my advantage and planted the seed that Lexi could be Bell, William could be Beast and Katelyn could be little Chip. They were thrilled with the idea and I was thrilled I could have them at least be coordinated–even if they weren’t in adorable animal outfits.

I bought Lexi’s because there is no way I could make a decent Bell costume. There weren’t any decent Beast costumes to buy so I pieced the outfit together and bought a Beast Hat. Then Daddy’s artist skills came in handy as he drew Kate’s Chip face on a onesie and I paired it with Lexi’s 1-year old Tutu.

It was pretty chilly out this year so we didn’t make it as far as last year, but the kids had a great time and LOVED all of the candy they got!!

Dear Kate,

When you were still in my belly, I gave a speech at your Auntie Sheila’s wedding about how awesome it is to have a sister, and sweet baby girl, you have one for the record books. I pray that this relationship only continues to get stronger but the love your big sister has for you brings me to tears. You’ll be pretty upset or crying about your gas pains, and while Lexi is doing a puzzle or coloring,  she’ll start singing you songs to help calm you down. She sings the traditional nursery rhymes with the normal words, but then will also go rouge and make up verses with your name in them. One morning, I went to wake her up for school and very groggily, she asks, ‘Is Beatle awake?’ and I said no, and she responds, ‘OK well then I’m still too sleepy to get up. Come get me when she is up.’ She loves to play with you and nobody can make you laugh more then Lexi. Her love for you is bone deep.

IMG_8960

Sleep

Sleep is going OK. I feel like you have regressed a little since I’ve headed back to work. You’ve started to wake up several times throughout the night and I’m working on giving you a pacifier or bouncing you a little and trying to get you to fall back asleep on your own without eating. You flip between sleeping in the magic merlin suit and a fleece swaddle, but probably favoring the swaddle. I’ll either bounce you to sleep (think me jiggling you in my arms, or doing squats) or I’ll put you in your crib awake with your beloved pacifier and you’ll fall asleep on your own, around 8:00ish. Every night the wake-up time is different but you usually need to eat between the 3:00 and 5:00 and then will fall back asleep until 7:30 or so. There was a week where you were getting up 4-6 times a night, which was pretty tough.

IMG_8974

Naps are still pretty inconsistent too as far as the length and when they take place. But there is usually a morning, afternoon and evening nap and they are almost always taken in your rock n’ play. Similar to your sibs, they are pretty short (like 20-40 min). You will fall asleep in your carseat when we are out and about, but will wake up when the car stops or we carry you inside.

IMG_8970

Eat

The eating adventure has been a bit of a rollercoaster since I headed back to work, and probably the most stressful thing for me right now. I’m barely producing enough milk to feed you while I’m at work. My work schedule is all over the board, and I often don’t have control over it. This is hard because I feel like I need to stick pretty close to whatever your schedule is to ensure I pump enough during each session for the next day AND that when I get home I have enough to nurse you. If I don’t stick to your schedule (even if I’m off by a half hour or 30 min) my body doesn’t have enough time to produce the milk that you need and then I’m short. I have very little milk saved in the freezer for emergencies and I know that we can always use formula, but if I don’t have to, I don’t want to. You eat about 5-6 times a day (3, 7, 10, 3, 6, 8). Two or three of them are bottles depending on when I leave in the morning get home in the evening. When you have a bottle, you’ll easily chug 5 oz. I am working on trying to wean you from that middle of the night feeding, then I’ll be able to pump in the morning and get some extra milk to help build up the freezer stash and help reduce the stress around this a little. The Dr. also suggested pumping before bed each night and then pumping each size during each session (was only doing one) to help increase the production.

IMG_8966

Development/personality

  • You despise tummy time and we rarely put you on your tummy on a flat floor because you spit up so much
  • Speaking of spit up, you still do this a bit. I regularly walk around with a spit-up stained on the shoulders of pretty much any shirt I’m wearing.
  • If there was a prize for the best smile you would get a blue ribbon
  • You love love love music. You love when anyone sings to you (especially Twinkle Twinkle). Your light up star is a fav toy and generally just clam way down when music is playing.
  • You’ve rolled from tummy to back a few times, but I think it is more from gravity than you intentionally rolling over.
  • You’re super ticklish, especially on your neck and we’ve heard your beautiful giggle
  • As I was reading your big sib’s 4 month post, I got nervous because they were both grabbing at toys by this point and I didn’t feel like you were doing that, but then realized we don’t give you very many opportunities to do so and as soon as I put you on your playmat your started to reach for toys
  • You still love the paci, but become a little less dependent on it each month.
  • You have super great head control–you’re still a little bobble head from time to time, but do a pretty good job holding it up
  • You’ve gotten pretty gassy. You’ll often wake up because of gas and scream in pain. I’m wondering if this is caused from the bottles so we’re trying the Dr. Browns bottles to see if that helps. When you’re in a lot of pain, you just scream with your mouth wide open and won’t even latch onto the pacifier to help calm down. Sometimes this even happens while nursing.
  • You poop every 4-5 days
  • You remind me a lot of William. I feel like you have very similar sleep patterns, eating tendencies and have his big beautiful eyes. Hopefully, you’ll also have his long eyelashes and dark complexion

Monthly Stats

  • Height: 24.25 “
  • Weight: 13.36 lbs
  • Head Circumference: 16.5″
  • Size 2 Diapers–and they are pretty big
  • Clothes: 3 months (but are starting to dabble into 6 month as you’re a little tall for some of the 3 month sleepers)

My sweet little Kate, we love you beyond words and I can’t imagine life without you. You bring to much happiness to your daddy and I and we are so excited to watch you grow and learn.

Love,

Mama

Little Beatle,

About half-way through the month, we were at the Dr. getting Lexi’s ears checked and the nurses asked Lexi and William, ‘What is your baby sister’s name’ and they responded, ‘Beatle’. I had to quickly remind them that it is a nickname and her real name is Katelyn. To which they both started to argue with me that your name is Beatle. So like it or not, I think this one may be sticking around.

3 months old and life keeps getting better and better. You are sweet and mom’s irrational thoughts and fears have diminished (or shifted to something else) as you are full of smiles. You look around and try to find the source of noise and can easily identify your mom, dad, brother and sister and love to give us smiles. I also think we’ve gotten a few little giggles out of you. You like it when we tickle you or bring your toes to your nose. There are also lots of coos and conversations to be had. I’ll say something, and you’ll coo back, and I muster some other noise out behind my ridiculously huge smiles (from your sweet noises) and we’ll go back and forth three or four times. Love these sweet innocent moments–just soothes my soul.

IMG_8771

You’ve started to show interest in your light-up, song-playing star on the playmat–which was a favorite toy for both of your older siblings. I have a hard time figuring out when to put you on it. If I do it after you eat, you spit up a lot and then lay in your spit up. But if I wait too long, you’re too tired and crabby. Lexi and Bood are convinced that you can play with toys and regularly give you things to play with while your eating. Your head control has gotten pretty strong. You bobble around a bit, but I can put you on my chest/shoulder and you keep your head up or you will snuggle into my shoulder and suck on it. You love to be held and carried. I’ll put you in the Mamaroo or the bouncer and you’ll start squawking, but as soon as I come into sight you stop. Occasionally, I’ll pop a pacifier back into your mouth, but about half the time you’ll spit it out and start crying when I walk away. You are a little socialite.

IMG_8921

Sleep is still pretty good, not as good as it was though. Most nights you wake somewhere between 3 and 5 and then you usually wake up for the day between 7 and 8, even if you don’t need to be fed. You continue to cat nap throughout the day for 20 – 60 minutes and still nap between each feeding. You love to have a blanket wrapped around the back of your head and on each side of your face, it just soothes your little soul. Naps are usually taken in the rock n play and night time is in your crib, swaddled. You got too tall for the newborn swaddles so we had to move up a size and we only have cotton ones of those and they stretch a lot so it is really challenging to get you tight enough–which is why I think you’ve started to wake in the middle of the night more frequently.

IMG_8854

Eating for the most part is going pretty well. You nurse every 2.5-3 hours to the minute during the day. However, we’re in the process of figuring out a new rhythm now that I’m back at work. You’re wanting to drink 4-5 ounces of milk in each bottle, but I’m producing about an ounce less than that each day. Also, I have been working shorter days, so you only need to take 2 bottles, but I don’t think that is going to fly when I’m back to working a full 8-9 hours a day (plus my commute) so I may need to add another pumping session, we’ll see. I’m also hoping that we can get you sleeping through the night consistently because, duh, mama wants good sleep and then, I’ll have more milk to pump in the morning before I leave and we would be in better shape. I definitely do not have the stash of milk like I did with Lexi and William. I’m really praying I’ll be able to nurse you all the way through like I did with the other two, but time will just tell I guess.

IMG_8900

Also interesting observation–you almost NEVER fall asleep nursing. You’ll pretend like you’re sleeping but the moment I move, especially to burp you, you wake up. You’re also a constant mover, like you’re brother. You’re always nuzzling your head and moving it around while you’re sleeping.

Which leads me to the next big major milestone. I’ve gone back to work. Cue all the whining from me. I shouldn’t whine, because overall, I really love what I do. I would say my exact role is in transition right now, but I do get really energized by the work, which is awesome and makes it a million times easier to be away from you munchkins. If money and health insurance and big things like that didn’t matter, I would for sure be home with you guys, but you do get to be home with your daddy, which is so awesome on so many levels. So I’m going to go ahead and tell myself to zip-it because in the grand scheme of things we as a family are so lucky to be in the position that we are.

IMG_8833

No major updates on the two big kids. They are still so beyond in love and obsessed with you, and it is so sweet. Lexi will only run errands with us if you’re coming with us. You’re also her top priority each morning. She wakes up and comes in and asks where you are. The moment she hears your little cries, she is asking if she can go see you. I hate to even say this, but she is almost a little too overboard with you. She wants to see, hug and kiss you so frequently, she often wakes you from your naps, which really drives me bonkers. You seem to think they’re pretty great too as you give them lots of smiles. Daddy has caught some great ones with you and them.

IMG_8899

Other noteable things about you at 3 months:

  • You like your bouncer and do OK in your carseat. The mamaroo is hit and miss. Most of the time, you don’t like to move, but do OK if you’re just watching life happen around you.
  • Your legs are starting to fill out and have stated to get little rolls on them.
  • You still wear a size 1 diaper and are in 0-3 month clothing. They’re still pretty spacious on you, but I think they will start to get too short pretty quick.
  • You poop about every 4-5 days and when you do, you’ll poop like 4 times in a day. I think we’ve had 3 blowouts so far.
  • You do pretty good putting your head up on tummy time, but you like it less than you used to as you almost always start crying in the first 2 minutes or so. We probably don’t put you on your tummy as much as we should. Similar to your back, you always spit up a bit.
  • Most people comment that you look like William. I think it’s the eyes. You both have big beautiful eyes! (you also have a beautiful completion and are just a really pretty baby)
  • You still love that pacifier, but aren’t quite as dependent as you were last month. You regularly spit it out and just hang out without it.

Love,

Mama

Katelyn 2 months

Dear Kate,

My sweet little Kate. Happy 2 months. Life is pretty grand right now. We are loving the warm sunshine and playing outside and for the most part not having a worry in the world (which means I create them for myself). We are all happy, healthy and loving being a family of five! This month, you really started to fill out more. You’re still 2 lbs. smaller than your brother and sister were at this age but growing at a healthy rate. You continue to be more observant of your surroundings, sleep like a champ and really are just the sweetest, mellowest baby ever and we all love you to pieces.

IMG_8530

Stats

  • Height: 22.2 inches (41.3%)
  • Weight: 10.3 lbs (30%)
  • Head Circumference: 15.5 inches (86%)
  • Diapers: Size 1 (going through about 130 a month)
  • Clothes: 0-3 month

Sleeping

You continue to be the worlds best baby sleeper. At 5.5 weeks you slept for 8.5 hours straight! Then a couple days later slept for 10 straight hours!! I, however am not getting that much sleep as I never go to bed when you do and always wake up before you because I’m worried about you not breathing or some other irrational thought and my boobs hurt. With that said, you still do have a couple nights a week where you sleep 5-6 hours and I’ll  get up in the middle of the night to nurse but you always fall asleep right away. All in all, no complaints on the sleep front and haven’t even needed a nap since your first week home. High-five baby girl!

Your naps are all over the board and are nowhere close to being on a schedule, but have started to develop a routine. Most days you cat nap throughout the day from to 20-60 minutes and this usually happens between every feeding. You eat, play (lay or walk around with me) and then sleep and then rinse and repeat 6 more times throughout the day. Naps are usually had in one of three places: your carseat, the rock n’ play or the bouncer. If I’m really lucky you may take one 2-hour nap at one point in the day.

IMG_8522

Eating

Nursing continues to go really well. You have a good latch and nurse on one side about every 2.5 hours or so. I can always tell when my milk is gone or has really really slowed down as you bop your head around and latch on and off. I’m not sure if you’re still hungry or you just want to nurse/sooth yourself, but as long as I put a pacifier in your mouth after you start bopping around, you seem fine.

IMG_8666

Spit up has decreased this month, it still happens, especially if you’ve gone more than 3 hours without nursing and I have more milk, but you’ll spit up maybe once or twice verses every feeding in your first month of life. I rarely burp you anymore, just put you upright and you’ll burp by yourself. I have been pretty lax about pumping this go-around and only do it if you’ve taken a bottle or you slept completely through the night and I’m super full in the morning. A mid-day session will give me about 3 ounces and the morning I’ll get 5-6 ounces (especially with righty!)

IMG_8667

There were a couple days were you had some angry painful cries so we popped an ounce of apple-prune juice into a bottle and it got you pooping again. However, when I mentioned this to the Dr, she said babies can go as long as 14 days without a poop as breastmilk is just so efficient your body uses everything up and there isn’t much left to poop out-crazy!

Development

You do pretty well on tummy time–assuming we time it right and you don’t have a full or empty belly. You’re lifting your head well and if you have your pacifier, you’ll often fall asleep, so clearly your pretty comfy on the tum-tum.

IMG_8548

I’ll probably write this same thing for the next 3 months, but you get more and more alert everyday. You have HUGE eyes and you love to look around at everything. You’ll open your eyes so big, they look kind of bug-like! We’re starting to get lots of comments about how you look similar to William and I think the eyes are a big reason. He’s got some big beautiful eyes (not to mention killer eyelashes, so if you inherit those you’ll be a lucky girl)

IMG_8672

Around 6.5 weeks we started to see a very little smile/smirk sneak out of you. It doesn’t appear very often, but we’ve seen it sneak out a couple of times. In fact, the low frequency made me pretty nervous and was worried there may be something wrong with you as Lexi and William would light up every time they saw us. But the Dr. (and your wise Daddy) told me to chill out.36074786414_b784dec733_o

You may have a fell in love for the very first time, with a pacifier. You love this miracle piece of plastic like nobody’s business. It really soothes you and I love it because it helps you be this calm, innocent little nugget of love that we just can’t get enough of. I would say the pacifier is in your mouth 90% of the time you are awake, and even often while you sleep (side note: which may be why you don’t smile as much, as your so busy sucking ?!?!). I’ve questioned myself a couple of times on if we’re giving this too you too much and building this dependency, but then I read William’s 2 month post and he had a small love affair with his as well and he vetoed it by himself at 6 months. I also decided, that even if you do become dependent on it, I’ll deal with that later and enjoy you as a sweet mellow little babe with this magnificent invention.

IMG_8712

Other things you like: the bath, snuggling, blankets wrapped around you–especially by your face. If you’re sleepy or fussy, but fed and changed, I’ll wrap a blanket around you, hold you close and you drift off into lala land. It is a trick of the trade for you sweet one. It’s kind of humorous to watch this unfold. You can be crying pretty good and I’ll wrap you in a blanket and your eyes will look at me and almost say ‘thank you’ as you can see the relief on your face. You also love going for walks–although we don’t go that often as you’re big brother and sister never want to go.

IMG_8657

This month, you also made your first trip to the cabin. You did awesome on the 3 hour car ride and slept most of the way. You loved the fresh air and were just a gem!

IMG_8622

Auntie Beca got married this month, and you got to come along for the party. Again, you did so good and slept your way through most of it. You had the cutest little dress on, and of course I didn’t get a pic of just you alone in it, but did get one with you and Mommy and Daddy. The big kids were at the cabin and it was so strange to just have one kid again–it felt so easy!

IMG_8736

Sibling love

You are one loved little girl! Lexi is straight up obsessed with you. She requests to give you a hug and a kiss every morning when you wake up. ‘Mom, I wanna see Beatle. I wanna give her a Kiss. Ohhh Hi Beatle!! You’re so cute and sweet!’ The moment you start to cry, she runs over to you to put your pacifier back in or cover you with blankets. Total mini momma. With that said, she is a little rough with you. She tries to give you hugs while you’re sleeping and often wakes you up and will squeeze you pretty hard when she wants to snuggle. I struggle with this, because my first instinct is to yell or scold her for being too rough, which always makes me feel bad because her intentions are so good and pure. She just loves you so much and always wants to be with you, but just doesn’t realize her strength or how smoothering she can be.

Kate 2 Months 1William loves you a lot too and is much more gentle. He loves to lie next to you on the floor and talks to you in his sweet little baby voice. Overall he has shown very few signs of jealousy and I feel his transition to your arrival was much smoother than Lexi’s when William was born. He is much more concerned about Lexi and what she is doing.

kate 2 months 2 Post-partum

Overall things are really great. My mood is fantastic and haven’t shown any signs of post-partum depression. My hair loss is in full effect and you would think I was an animal shedding their winter coat by how much hair I loose every time I shower and brush my hair.

I’m officially back to my pre-preggo weight and can fit into jeans. They’re a little tighter than what I remember, but I can wear them. I even bought several new pairs as the dress code changed at work and we can wear jeans more frequently and my jeans were getting pretty worn when I got pregnant last fall.

I had my 6 week checkup with my Dr. and everything looked good. I have yet to exercise though. I know I should and I want to build up some strength again, but am not motivated enough yet to prioritize it. It will come, eventually.

That is it sweet Kate. You are such an amazingly good baby we are so lucky to have you. It is so hard to believe that you’ve already been with us for 2 months AND that you have only been with us for 2 months. You are the perfect little caboose to our family and am so excited to continue to watch you grow.

Love,

Mama

Katelyn 1 Month

Baby Kate,

Where do I even begin my sweet baby girl? (queue your hormonal overly sensitive mama). Overall, this past month has been amazing and I am high on life right now and never want this fairytail to end. I am overwhelmed by how good God is and how grateful I am for this little family of ours. You are such a healthy, good, mellow and cute baby. You just go with the flow and have yet to let us know of something you don’t like. You sleep great, are eating well and your big brother and sis just want to eat you up. Additionally, having Daddy home is pretty much the best thing in the world. We all just get to hang out together as a family of 5 every day (minus the work daddy has to do). There is no rush for anyone to get up and get out of the house each morning or pressure to be in bed by a certain time. Both mommy and daddy have the freedom to run errands in the middle of the day and take one or two kids, but not be overwhelmed by all three. There are two sets of hands here almost all the time to either make meals, clean meals up, snuggle you or put someone to bed. We’re able to stay on top of keeping the house put together, laundry and making meals and it just feels so good to not have any of those ‘chores’ sitting on my shoulders.

Kate's 1st week-73

The weather has been gorgeous and I am totally soaking up all the vitamin D whether it is going for walks, watching the kids ride bikes, playing in the pool, working in my garden/house projects, having ice cream treats or pushing the big kids on the swings. I’ve spent a lot of time thanking God for this gift of time together and for blessing us with such an amazing family. I’m doing my best to just soak in this time and not stress about it coming to an end (which unfortunately, I know it will–the weather and this fairy tail).

Monthly stats

  • Weight: 8 lbs 5 oz (28%) (crazy that you are a month old and still smaller then your big brother was at birth!)
  • Height: 21.61 CM (82%)
  • Head circumference: 14.61 in (80%)
  • Clothes: newborns
  • Diapers: just moved up to size 1 (because sister can pee and fill up a diaper like Whoa!)

Sibling Love

As I mentioned above, your big brother and sister are enamored with you. Both love to ask where you are at all times and love to look at you and give you 50 kisses a day. William was lying next to you in your bedroom one afternoon and asked me if I could tickle your toes? He then turned to you and asked, ‘Do you have toes? Look at my toes!!!’ He also likes to tell you ‘not to throw a fit’ when you’re crying as we commonly use the phrase, ‘you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit’

Kate 1 Month 3a

Your newness hasn’t worn off on Lexi either. She loves to do tummy time with you and pick out your clothes and hair bows each day. She also gets right up in your face, like centimeters away to check you out. We’ve had to institute a new rule, you must be a hands distance away from your face unless you’re giving a quick kiss–no lingering. She also likes to use a ‘baby voice’ when she talks to you. She raises her voice two octaves and she says ‘Hiiii Beatle, Hiiii’ while stroking the top of your head. And then I die on the floor because it is too sweet.

Kate 1 Month 2a

Eating

I pretty much had to wake you for every feeding for the first two weeks. Around week 3, you started to become much more alert and would wake on your own and cry when you wanted to eat. But, as soon as I picked you up, you stopped crying (reason 483 why you are the best baby). You’re still nursing on one side for each feeding. It still takes awhile to latch on. You’re on and off and on and off and after about 3-5 times of this, you usually stay on. I think this is mostly because you have gas when you wake up and you’re trying to work through it and I feed you too quickly. You do spit up quite a bit, usually right after a burp, but then you’ll continue to spit up for about an hour after eating–especially when you’re on your back or doing tummy time. You have also taken a bottle a couple times and just chowed down.

Side note: The few times I have pumped I’ve gotten about half of what I used to get with your big siblings. Obviously, you need less milk than they did, but hoping this won’t be a problem for the future)

Sleeping

The first two weeks of your life were pretty darn sleepy girlfriend! If I had to guess, you would sleep around 20 hours a day. The only time you were really awake was to eat and even then, I had to wake you up almost every time. Noises didn’t  startle you and we could put you down and pick you up without a peep, so easy!

kate 1 month 5a

Then, around week 3, you started to wake up on your own to eat or when you had a dirty diaper. At night, we would put you in a onesie and the fleece swaddle and you would sleep anywhere from 4-6 hours. Most of your naps were either in the rock’n play or in someone’s arms. Snuggling against a warm body is by far your favorite and when you sleep best and for the longest stretches. You usually wake pretty quickly if you are put down after snoozing in someone’s arms.

You are by far my most cuddly baby. You love to curl up in a ball with your scrawny little legs in a frog position and snuggle on my (or anyone’s) chest. And my oh my, is it the best. I am trying to soak up that delicious smell of your sweet head, the short little breaths that trickle across my chest and the little grunts you make while cutting some zzzz. When we’re really lucky, and you fall into a deep sleep you pur like a little kitten.

Kate 1 Month 2a

Like most babes, you really like the white noise and that also seems to help get you some longer sleep stretches

Nicknames

You have generated quite a list of nicknames. When we picked out your name, we thought we would call you Kate, which we are, but we do call you Katelyn a lot too. Right away, Lexi started calling you ‘The Little One’ and daddy started calling you ‘Baby Beatle’ or Baby B and Lexi and William have both gravitated to that and regularly call you that. William also calls you Baby Tate as he doesn’t pronounce his ‘K’s’ very well yet. I have a feeling Beatle is going to stick just as Bood did for William.

Personality/Development

As I’ve mentioned several times before, you are world’s best baby and just are so mellow. You’ve started to cry a little more in the last week or so, but for the first 2-3 weeks of life, you would really only cry if you had some bad gas or were pooping. In the last week, you’ve started to cry when you’re hungry, when you need your diaper changed or when you are uncomfortable (too hot, too cold, funky position)

IMG_8457

Around the 2.5 week mark, some baby acne came in. It isn’t terrible, but I do miss that absolute perfect baby complexion. We’re trying to wash your face each day to keep it in check and that seems to make it less red. Around this same timeframe, Daddy and I both noticed you started to bulk up a little. You’re legs weren’t as scrawny as they had been and your cheeks were a little more full. You’re also fairly dry and your skin is peeling as well.

Sister, you have got some BIG feet! Almost everyone that sees them comments on the length of them and your ‘finger toes’. You have also developed a blister on the top of your lip from sucking. It comes and goes, but I remember Lexi having this too.

So far, you love sucking on your pacifier to help sooth yourself and for the most part do pretty well in the bouncer, car, swing and ergo. You also seem to really enjoy bath time. You just lie in your little bathtub and look around.

Also, right around week 3ish, your eyes got goopy, little green stuff coming out and little white. You also were having these incidents where you would start gagging of choking on your back. Goopy eyes turned about to be some clogged tear ducts and we never figured out the choking thing, but you spent a couple of nights sleeping on my chest in the rocking chair as I didn’t trust you anywhere else and we eventually transitioned you to sleeping in the rock’n play each night.

My recovery

As mentioned in your 1 week post, my milk coming in was the most painful with you, but everything else recovery wise has been the easiest. By week 2, I pretty much felt 100% back to normal and felt good enough to go work out (I didn’t but felt like I could). By the time I delivered you, I had gained 17 lbs. and by postpartum week 2, 12 of them were gone. However, the last 2 weeks, the number on the scale hasn’t budged and neither has anything with my body and I don’t think it will change moving forward. I’m going to need to exercise and eat right to make any changes, which isn’t the worst thing in the world, but it is also nice when you can eat anything you want and the lbs. just fall off, or your body continues to shrink back to its original size. Although, I’m only up, 5 lbs. from my pre-pregnancy weight, my belly is definitely bigger and flabbier than it was pre-preggos. Per my gush fest above, I’m fortunately not suffering from any kind of postpartum depression, just the opposite. The only other thing to note was I felt like I bled longer this time around. I’m still wearing thin pads and really hoping this ends soon because pads just suck.

IMG_8464

In summary life is amazing right now, you are an awesome baby that everyone is obsessed with. What a lucky little girl you are right now.

Love, Mama
